With Momenta I try to describe an irreplaceable moment in time. A moment in which something starts and at the same time something ends.
Momenta is a composition for female choir (s,m,a). It was commissioned by Dutch Choir Music Now during the covid-19 period of 2020 when a lot of dutch composers struggled to get commissions.
Momenta contains out of two movements. The overall harmonic foundation of the composition is based upon the overtone series of the notes E0 and A0. The last movement ends with two 6 voice chords which are completely based upon these overtones.
The lyrics are by Ernest Dowson :
They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream
