Syntax Error
Program note
Dutch composer Danny de Graan presents 'Syntax Error', a contemporary piece for small orchestra that delves into the theme of communication. De Graan is known for his frequent use of computer algorithms in composing and takes a different path with this work: he composes it entirely by hand. This deviation from his usual working method results in a composition that is both deeply personal and richly structured.
“Syntax Error” explores the concept of communication through the metaphor of software coding errors. In programming, a syntax error indicates a breakdown in communication between the programmer and the machine, leading to a malfunction or error. De Graan translates this idea into musical form and symbolizes the disruptions and misunderstandings inherent in human communication.
The orchestration of "Syntax Error" is remarkably diverse, featuring woodwinds, brass, percussion, guitar, bass guitar and piano, but excluding strings. This unique instrumentation creates a diverse palette of sounds, with each section representing different components of the software code. The woodwinds and brass often engage in intricate, interlocking patterns, while the percussion provides sharp, jarring interruptions that mimic the abrupt nature of syntax errors. The guitar and bass guitar add a contemporary touch, placing the piece in a modern sonic landscape, while the piano provides both melodic and percussive elements, bridging the gap between the different instrumental voices.
Throughout the composition, listeners encounter a series of contrasting musical ideas that reflect the fragmented and sometimes chaotic nature of broken communication. De Graan's manual composition technique gives a human touch to these electronic themes, giving the work emotional depth and complexity.
“Syntax Error” challenges audiences to consider the fragile and often imperfect nature of communication, both digital and human. With this lively and dynamic piece, Danny de Graan not only demonstrates his versatility as a composer, but also invites us to reflect on the profound impact of miscommunication in our interconnected world.
